Spring Recruitment 2009
Open Rush
Open Recruitment, or sometimes called "Open Rush", is the period at the University of Pennsylvania where Beta Rho opens its doors to anyone who is interested in learning more about becoming a Sigma Nu. Over each night of Open Rush, potential rushes can come over to the house, meet some of the brothers, and get some free food. Open Rush usually occurs during the first three days of the Spring semester and is open both to interested freshman and sophomores.
Open Rush is approaching quickly! This year, Spring Open Rush will occur between January 14th - January 16th at the Sigma Nu House. Check back here for updates on what events we will have each night.
Closed Rush
Closed Recruitment, or sometimes called "Closed Rush", is the period following Open Recruitment where select individuals are invited back to the Beta Rho house or special events in order to meet more of the brothers and to let us know more about you. Unlike Open Rush, Closed Rush is by invitation only and typically becomes more selective as time goes on. Throughout the process, the brotherhood will decide to invite back rushes they could see fitting into our brotherhood. By the end, invitations are handed out to a select few rushes who we want to become Sigma Nu brothers.
Closed Rush will begin following the end of Open Rush on January 16th. Because of the nature of this process, Closed Rush events will not be posted on this website.
Why Sigma Nu?
Joining a fraternity can be one of the most rewarding experiences you can have during your collegiate years. And, although “going Greek” is a lifetime commitment, choosing the right fraternity for you does not have to be a difficult decision. Simply decide what is most important to you in life, then, find an organization that aligns with those values.
Taken directly from our mission statement, Sigma Nu Fraternity exists to develop ethical leaders inspired by our three founding principles of Love, Honor and Truth. Further, we work to develop the mind, heart and character of each of our members so they, too, can realize our vision of “Excelling with Honor.”
While you are looking for the right fraternity, we hope you seriously consider why membership in Sigma Nu is distinctive beyond what other fraternities have to offer—it could be one of the best decisions you will ever make.
Our House
3819 Walnut
Our chapter house is a bastion of heritage and wonder. Built in the 1850's, it began as a mansion for a wealthy Victorian family. It was then used as a church for a time, still evidenced by the organ pipes in the main living room where meetings are held and brothers and guests spend time together.
The house became the Sigma Nu House in 1894, right after Sigma Nu was founded at Penn. It has withstood generations of brothers and stands strong and elegant today. Some major renovations have taken place in recent years, the most notable of which is the remodeling of the front porch. Currently, funds are being raised to renovate the bathrooms on the second and third floors, where brothers live.
Unlike most fraternities on campus, the house is not owned by the University. The property is owned and managed by the Beta Rho Property Company, a group of dedicated alumni who work tirelessly to maintain house operations. This allows for many comforts that would not be present under the University's ownership, such as high-definition digital cable.
